Software Radio
The concept brings to wireless communications what “universal” DSPs did for signal processing – the ability to have hardware that will adapt (within limits) to any radio standard. Imagine having hardware, that by just changing the software running it, can change to several different wireless standards. It’s like just flashing your GSM/GPRS phone to make it into a 3G terminal, as long as the radio hardware is able to cope with complexity and frequencies of the new standard. The first field tests have been given the go ahead in Ireland.
